“Hand of God” Goal

The infamous “Hand of God” goal happened in the 1986 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals between Argentina and England.  Argentina beat England in the game 2-0.  Diego Maradona of Argentina punched the soccer ball with his left fist over the goalie of England for Argentina’s first goal of the game.  After the game he said he scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God”, thus coining the phrase “Hand of God”.

Four minutes after the Hand of God goal, Maradona scored the “Goal of the Century“.  Maradona made a 60 metre, 10 second run and passed 6 English players to score Argentina’s second goal.  This goal is considered by some to be the best individual goal ever scored.  Argentina ended up winning the Word Cup in 86.
